As it turned out, Abel did show up for dinner that night, but he was completely distracted, spilled a full glass of wine across the long table that the Holiday Adventure Clubbers were sharing, and left halfway through because he claimed he still wasn’t feeling well. Izzy caught Lucy’s eye from the other end of the table and gave her a long, serious look that said she was angry, but the minute Abel had vanished—ostensibly to catch an Uber back to the hotel—Izzy had picked up her own glass of wine and moved down to sit closer to Lucy.

They spent the rest of the meal in stitches as they listened to Stella talk about her time on the sets of various commercials, and then everyone turned their attention to the cousins from Maine as they told hilarious stories about dimwitted tourists coming to their little coastal town in search of crabs and small-town New England charm. Lucy loved hearing everyone pitch in with their own funny stories as bottles of wine were passed around, and for the first time on any trip she’d been on, she really felt that they were having a family dinner and not just a meal where a bunch of strangers had agreed to share a table and a check.

Maybe it’s working together for Underwater Cuba, she thought as she watched Beth from Maine elbow Garret Lebender as the two of them laughed heartily over a joke they’d shared. Maybe working as a team in order to accomplish something altruistic creates a bond that just traveling together doesn’t. She’d been somewhat dubious about selling her tour group on doing manual labor in exchange for tourist visas, but in the end, it seemed as though it might have been the glue that was holding them together.

With the bill paid and the wine bottles emptied, the group wandered back to the hotel, talking happily as they wound through the streets as a unit. Stella had strong-armed two of the Maine cousins into walking with her and singing Broadway show tunes as they passed by buildings with open windows, and Izzy and Lucy had joined Garret for the walk, listening to him talk about his life back home while his wife bellowed “Take Me or Leave Me” from Rent.

It was already close to eleven o’clock by the time the group made it to the lobby of their hotel, and Lucy left Izzy with the promise to meet her back down there at midnight. She was planning on taking the next hour to brush her teeth, stretch her feet, and answer a few messages from home, but when she sat down on the edge of the bed in her hotel room, she realized that she’d missed four texts from Sharon, eight from Nurse Glinda, and a string of phone calls.

With a deep sigh, she skipped the texts and dialed Sharon’s phone. It was late, and Glinda was off-duty, so she figured she might as well start with her aunt.

“Honey,” Sharon said the second she answered the phone.
